This blog will show the progress of Strath Haugh, my model railway based loosely on Brechin.

First ladder frame constructed using 44x18mm planed pine. All joints are glued and screwed for added strength.

The frame is laid on top of the MDF baseboard and a pencil line is drawn around the frame.

MDF laid on frame. Note the pencil outline of the ladder frame. Pilot holes drilled at suitable intervals and MDF screwed to frame ensuring all screw heads are counter sunk.

First three sections in place.

Baseboards In Position

I have been collecting model railway items for 30 odd years with the intention of one day building a layout. I have many ideas that I would like to incorporate in to a layout, too many in fact. Due to space limitations there is only so much one can fit into a layout.

I have a wall 14'6" long that will be the back bone of the layout. I will initially be running an end-to-end set up with the possibility of making it into a returning loop at a future date. The layout will rest on top of existing kitchen base units. Rather than fit kitchen work tops I will lay chip board on top of the units to give a solid flat base for the layout. The sectional layout will then lie on top of the chipboard.

As I already have in my possession two sheets of MDF 1220x600x12 I will use these as 2 sections of the layout. I also have a slighty longer sheet that will be the centre section. 44x18 mm planed timber will be used to make a ladder frame for the boards to sit on. This should give the baseboards rigidity but keep them fairly light weight.
